As parents, we have the responsibility to nourish our children with healthy, nutritious food.
This takes time and thought, but when we do it we actually invest in their health and well-being.
And at the same time we invest in our own peace of mind.
Big corporations don't care about the healthy diet of our young ones. They only care about profit, and that is why they target our children with billions of dollars worth of advertising.
Do you, as a parent, care?
If you do, go the extra mile. The benefits are immense-less doctor visits, less antibiotics, less stress on the rest of the family. We all need daily defenses against infections and germs, but our young ones need them even more. We are what we eat, after all-the better we eat, the healthier we will feel! And best of all, our young ones will shine like the sun, with health and joy.
Commitment is the name of the game-a life-time commitment. Give them a good foundation and they will build on it in later years. And don't settle for less. The system wants to mold us in a certain way, so it can do whatever it wants with us, and it is very powerful. Just like salmon, we have to swim against the current, with the objective to shape our children's taste buds to crave and love real and healthy food.
We live in a time in which we have no lack of knowledge; rather, we have an abundance of information on any subject, in fact, more than we can process, and all so readily available! Our global village has many advantages. We can have wonderful products and herbs and spices from the four corners of this amazing planet, right on our doorstep. The only thing we have to do is be adventurous enough to learn about other cultures and what they love to eat!
There is so much value in other cultures. If we open our hearts and minds, we can have fun experimenting with meals from different countries. Let me share with you what I used to do in my early years: I would read through books and magazines for recipes. Based on a recipe's ingredients, I could understand if I would like it or not, so on shopping day I would get the ingredients and at some point during the week make my new recipe. If I liked it, I added it to my little box of recipes that week; if not, no harm done, but at least I knew I had explored something new.
So dear friends, don't panic! It's not so difficult-you just need to be organized, and by that I mean you should plan ahead and make sure you have your ingredients available. Then it will be a joy to prepare tasty meals "from scratch" that the family will enjoy.
Along with good organization, our love and self-sacrificing spirit will help us in doing what is beneficial for our loved ones.
Just start with an afternoon or an evening during the week. Prepare a healthy soup with vegetables and legumes from scratch, put something in the oven that you can forget about while it cooks, and make a wonderful salad-I love a Greek salad with nice juicy tomatoes, real Greek feta cheese, some of that versatile olive oil, mmm-and before you know it, you have meals ready for two or three days.
Here's to all of you who put your children first-believe me, you will be blessed!
